Jewelry
I set up this web page to show a few of the gold jewelry items I've made. I started about nine years ago.
The first things I made were our wedding bands. Our wedding party all threw in old broken earrings, necklaces, and bracelets. I made our rings from that gold.
It's kind of a sentimental way to do it. I then made some crosses and rings and pendants for the wedding party using some of the same gold that our wedding bands are made out of.
While we were at The Abundant Living Church the congregation got together and contributed gold to make the crosses below for Pastors Ken and Kim Albert for Pastor's
Appreciation Day. Pastor Ken had asked if he could watch me do some goldwork some day. I had him come over to watch when I made his cross. He actually helped.
He had no idea it was his cross. He was very surprised when one of the council members presented it to him a month or so later. Pastor Ken's cross has about 3/4 ounce of 14K gold. When I melt and remelt the gold while working with it metals other than gold have lower melting and boiling points.
It's mostly zinc that I boil off, which causes the gold to look more red than normal 14K gold. I cast these crosses in cuttle bone. You know, the stuff they give to parrots to keep their beaks
trim and add minerals to their diet. It does burn a little when I pour the gold in but it retains enough of the desired shape to
last until the gold hardens. When I cast Pastor Ken's cross I told him I couldn't decide whether to file it smooth and polish it up or just leave the natural grain
surface from the cuttle bone. Pastor said "Oh no, leave it that way, it looks like wood." So I did. They turned out pretty good.
I'm thinking that I could make a crosses like this for no cash cost if you have enough scrap gold or old jewelry you don't care for anymore. I would keep any excess gold (up to a resonable amount) as payment.

Below are some pictures of the process. I had Pastor Ken take the pictures.
This is the cuttle bone with a reverse image of the cross to be cast. I put the pieces together and clamp them with wire
(this is a very low tech operation as you can see by the propane torch below).
The top off the mold the back of the cross is visible. You can see the wings which I cut into the back of the mold to allow the motlten
gold to freely flow into the cross pieces. This also preserved the cuttle bone grain in the top of the cross pieces because it filled them from behind.

While Joan was being certified and I was getting my NITROX cert through William Anzueto
at Dive Outpost (see the Links) I was introduced to a lot of information about cave and cavern diving. I was intrigued by the line arrows
used by cave divers. When they go into the cave they tie off a line outside. They then trail the line all the way in and periodically they put these line arrows on the line pointing the way out of the cave in case they get disoriented.
I thought Jesus' Divers know the way, it's Jesus. So I came up with an idea for a pendant with a cross with a line hanging from the bottom and a line arrow on it pointing the way of eternal life.
I finally got aroung to making one. This one is a little over four and one quarter inches long top to bottom. There is a good sized loop on the back top of the cross to accomodate a chain.
It includes a quarter ounce (troy) of 14K gold. Its not thin or wimpy. The line flexes. It is custom hand made.
The pictures aren't as good as I wanted but you get the idea.
